Nebraska Public Power District is warning customers in parts of north-central Nebraska that extreme heat could push electricity demand to some of the highest levels of the summer. NPPD says today(Mon) is expected to be a peak day for energy use, and there remains a possibility of temporary service interruptions if demand exceeds what the area’s transmission system can deliver. The utility stressed the concern is not related to power generation, saying there is enough electricity available, but the existing transmission network could become strained during periods of exceptionally high usage.
Areas of concern include Brown, Keya Paha, Rock, Holt and Boyd counties. Communities served directly by NPPD include Ainsworth, Atkinson, Bassett, Butte, Bristow, Inman, Long Pine, Lynch and O’Neill, among others. NPPD is encouraging residents to voluntarily reduce electricity use by raising thermostats a few degrees, limiting the use of major appliances, unplugging unnecessary electronics and keeping curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day.
The utility says ongoing transmission projects, including the R-Project and the Ainsworth Wind-Bassett transmission line, are expected to help address these system constraints in the future. NPPD says it will continue providing updates if conditions change or if service interruptions become necessary.
