Authorities in North Platte say a series of small ditch fires reported earlier this month were caused by a mechanical problem and were not intentionally set.
Two small fires were reported on the southwest side of North Platte on July 16 and 17 and were quickly extinguished. Two additional fires were reported on July 22, including one near the Wild West Arena and another south of North Platte along Highway 83.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the North Platte Police Department, the City Fire Marshal’s Office, and a State Fire Marshal investigator to determine the cause. Investigators identified a vehicle that had been near each of the fire locations and interviewed the owner as well as a local mechanic who had worked on the vehicle that day. After examining the vehicle and confirming information gathered during the investigation, authorities concluded all four fires were caused by a mechanical issue and were not the result of any intentional act.
