NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A Heat Advisory will take effect late Saturday morning and remain in place through 10 p.m. Monday across much of Nebraska and northern Kansas.
The National Weather Service says the advisory will begin at 11 a.m. or noon Saturday, depending on the location. The affected area includes western, north-central, and south-central Nebraska, including Broken Bow, Thedford, North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, Ord, and surrounding communities.
High temperatures are expected to climb from the upper 90s to around 105 degrees. Heat index readings could reach 100 to 105 degrees Saturday before rising to between 105 and 110 degrees Sunday and Monday.
Forecasters warn that the prolonged combination of hot temperatures and high humidity could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for people working outdoors, older adults, young children, and those without access to air conditioning.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned room, and check on friends, family members, and neighbors. Outdoor activities should be limited during the hottest portion of the day.
Children and pets should never be left unattended inside vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
