BEAVER CITY – An Arapahoe man faces up to five additional years in prison after being sentenced in Furnas County District Court for a series of sexual assaults against his former stepdaughter.
67-year-old Paul Douglas Brooks appeared before District Judge Patrick Heng following a plea agreement reached earlier this year. Under the terms of the deal, the state reduced the charges to one count of felony child abuse, while dismissing two counts of first-degree sexual assault.
The charges stem from a prolonged period of abuse that occurred over two decades ago. According to Furnas County District Court records, the abuse began in June 1998 and persisted until May 2004. The victim was Brooks’ stepdaughter who was under the age of 10 when the abuse started.
The crimes occurred while Brooks lived in the same household as the child.
Brooks is already an incarcerated felon, serving 25-35 years in prison for a separate sexual assault of a child conviction.
A release from the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office states that the latest conviction stems from an investigation that originated during the prosecution of a Furnas County sex trafficking case involving Billy Quinn. During that investigation, law enforcement discovered additional evidence of sexual assault to other victims, which resulted in the current charge and conviction.
He will serve his latest 4-5 year sentence consecutively with his current sentence of 25-35 years.
The Furnas County Sheriff and Nebraska State Patrol aided in the investigation of the case.
