Dundy County, Neb. — A 39-year-old woman is in a Colorado trauma center with serious injuries Monday morning after being struck by a train in southwest Nebraska.
Emergency crews responded to to the railroad tracks off old Highway 34, just east of Benkelman, around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office says the woman was walking eastbound on the tracks when a westbound Burlington Northern train struck her.
Paramedics initially rushed the victim to Dundy County Hospital before a medical helicopter airlifted her to Colorado for specialized care. The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation.
