KEARNEY — A Kearney home was left uninhabitable following an early-morning fire Wednesday, though no injuries were reported.
The Kearney Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 3:53 a.m. to a structure fire at 1916 3rd Avenue. Fire officials said all occupants had escaped the home before crews arrived.
KVFD responded with three apparatus and 25 firefighters. Upon arrival, crews found active fire on the southwest corner of the home and heavy smoke coming from the front door and eaves.
Firefighters began an interior attack and primary search of the residence, encountering heavy fire conditions inside. The fire was brought under control at 4:25 a.m.
One person, two dogs, and a cat were inside the home when the fire started. All escaped safely before firefighters arrived.
The home sustained extensive fire and smoke damage and is considered uninhabitable. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the displaced resident.
The Nebraska State Fire Marshal and Kearney Police Department are assisting with the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
CHI Health Good Samaritan EMS, Nebraska Public Power District, and NorthWestern Energy also assisted at the scene.
