North Platte is preparing for a rare moment in the national spotlight as Vice President J.D. Vance visits the community Thursday for a campaign rally. According to Gary Person, president and CEO of the North Platte Area Chamber of Commerce and Development Corporation, the visit presents a significant opportunity to showcase the city to a national audience. “Regardless of your politics, the sitting vice president of the United States and North Platte in the same sentence means a lot,” Person said. He described the announcement as generating considerable excitement throughout the community, with residents reaching out by phone, text, and email seeking information about the event. Person called the visit “an honor and a privilege” and said it demonstrates confidence in North Platte’s ability to host a high-profile national event.
Person said local officials, law enforcement agencies, airport personnel, and federal security teams have been working behind the scenes to prepare for the visit, which is expected to draw a large crowd to the D&N Event Center. “A lot of people will work really hard behind the scenes to make sure everything is done as well as it can be,” he said. While acknowledging the logistical and security challenges involved, Person said North Platte has a long tradition of volunteers and community members stepping forward when called upon. He compared the excitement surrounding the visit to memories of President Ronald Reagan’s appearance in North Platte decades ago, noting that many residents still talk about that event today.
Person said the vice president’s visit offers more than political significance. He believes it provides another opportunity for North Platte to demonstrate its hospitality and community spirit on a national stage. “It’s one more thing that makes North Platte relevant on the national stage,” Person said. “We’re excited about it and just hope everything works very well for everybody.” He added that while political campaigns can be divisive, he hopes the event serves as a reminder of the democratic process and the importance of bringing people together after elections are over.
