Motorists in Hastings now have access to another portion of the South Street and Elm Avenue roundabout project.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation opened the east leg of the roundabout Friday. The opening follows the debut of the north and west legs of the intersection in September as work continues on the Hastings Southeast project.
NDOT says contractor Werner Construction also paved one outside lane of Elm Avenue between B Street and D Street on Friday. Weather permitting, crews plan to pave the remaining outside lane next week, with the center lane also expected to be poured once concrete strength requirements are met. When that work is complete, local traffic will be able to travel from the roundabout to Casey’s and Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village at D Street.
Officials say paving of U.S. Highway 6 south of D Street is not expected until November. Until then, through traffic on Highway 6 will continue to use the southeast bypass route along J Street and Showboat Boulevard. Drivers are reminded to use caution in work zones, buckle up and avoid distractions.
